What kind of damage is it?

Most calls are one of these six. Each has a cause, and the repair has to deal with the cause, not just fill the mark.

Nail pop

CauseFraming lumber dries and shrinks after the house is built, and the nail backs out of the stud.

Proper fixPull it, drive a screw into the stud beside it, then coat, sand and prime. Hiding the head is why a pop comes back.

Corner bead crack

CauseOutside corners take bumps, and the bead under the compound loosens or the compound chips along the edge.

Proper fixCut out the loose compound, re-fasten or replace the bead, then build the corner back in thin coats and sand it straight.

Roof or AC leak stain

CauseA roof leak, a clogged AC condensate line or a sweating duct soaks the board and leaves a brown ring.

Proper fixStop the leak first. Then cut out any soft board, replace it, seal it with stain-blocking primer and paint. Paint alone bleeds through.

Lifting tape at a ceiling joint

CauseTape set in too little compound, or damp and movement at the joint, lets it bubble and peel away.

Proper fixCut away every loose inch of tape, re-tape the joint, coat it in thin layers and feather it flat before any paint.

Door-handle hole

CauseA door swings open with no stop behind it and the handle punches through the board.

Proper fixCut the hole square, set in a backer and a fitted patch, then tape, coat and match the texture. A hole is a patch, not filler.

Cracks above a door frame

CauseHouses settle, and the weakest line in a wall is the corner of a door or window opening.

Proper fixTape the crack so it can flex, then coat, texture and paint. If it keeps widening, that is a foundation question, not a patch.

“… Who do you call when you try and remove a towel holder and the whole thing busts out the wall??? Well I called Jesse from Tellez painting because I knew he would come to the rescue! I sent him the pictures of what I did and he came the same day to patch it up! My husband will not be finding out about this one lol! …”

One crew, one job

Who repairs drywall and paints it in Boerne?

Tellez & Sons Painting does both, with the same crew. Most painters hand a damaged wall to a separate drywall contractor, and most drywall crews do not paint, so the repair and the paint end up as two jobs with a gap between them. The gap is where trouble starts. A patch that was never primed shows through the paint as a dull square, and a texture that nearly matches gives itself away in raking light. Jesse Tellez and his son Isaac cut out the damage, tape and coat it, match the texture and finish with interior painting, in Boerne, Fair Oaks Ranch and across the Hill Country. The crew that finds the cause is the crew that primes the patch and rolls the last coat. The business dates to 1982. Reviews describe the same thing: one crew replacing old board, hanging new Sheetrock and painting the whole room.

“Father and Son duo getting it done professionally! We had them remove and replace the insulation and Sheetrock, and got the whole room painted! They did a great job and would recommend them to anyone who is needing a refresh!”

How a repair actually goes

Five steps, in this order. Skipping one is how a repair comes back.

Room sheeted in plastic with drywall repairs underway
Room sheeted off, repairs underway
Garage wall with new drywall and taped joints
New board and taped joints on a garage wall
Ceiling and wall joint with damaged tape ready for repair

  1. 1

    Find the cause

A stain, a crack or a pop has a reason, and the repair has to answer it. A leak still running, a stud that has dried and moved, a door with no stop behind it: each gets sorted out before any compound goes on.

  2. 2

    Protect the room

Floors, furniture and doorways are covered, and the work area is sheeted off in plastic before sanding starts. Then the damaged board is cut back to something solid.

  3. 3

    Fasten, tape and build

New board is screwed to the framing. Joints get tape, corners get bead, and compound goes on in thin coats, each one dry before the next and each one wider than the last, so the repair has no hump.

  4. 4

    Prime, then match the texture

Primer stops a patch from showing through the paint as a dull square. Then the texture is matched to the wall around it, which is the step below.

  5. 5

    Paint it wall to wall

A dabbed-in touch-up shows, so the paint goes on across the whole wall, by the same crew that made the repair. Nobody turns up later to discover a problem.

The part nobody explains

Why a flat, taped patch still shows

A wall is read by the way light crosses it. A patch can be flat, well taped and sanded smooth, and a wrong texture still throws a shadow or a shine that the eye finds in seconds. Matching it is half the repair.

Sprayed, small even bumps

Orange peel

Thinned compound sprayed through a hopper gun, leaving small, even bumps like the skin of the fruit. Matching it means test spraying until the bump size and spacing line up with the wall, then feathering past the edge of the patch so the join has nowhere to show.

“Great experience! We had Téllez texturize two bedrooms with orange peel and fix some damaged areas. I was very satisfied with the work.”

Splattered, then flattened

Knockdown

Compound splattered on, then flattened with a wide knife while still wet, leaving flat-topped patches with low valleys between. The timing of the knife pass sets the look, so a knockdown patch is matched by feel on the wall itself, not by a formula.

Skimmed edge to edge

Smooth, level 5

A skim coat over the entire surface, so board, tape and patch all take paint the same way. Smooth hides nothing: any ridge or low spot shows under a window, so a patch is skimmed edge to edge until the wall reads as one flat plane.

Taking popcorn off a ceiling and putting a new texture up is a job of its own. See popcorn ceiling removal.

A warehouse wall, patched, finished and painted

The same method on a commercial scale: one long warehouse wall covered in drywall patches and joint compound, taken through finishing and paint until it reads as a single clean surface. More work like it is on the commercial painting page and in the Sheet rock and drywall gallery.

Drywall repair questions, answered

What affects the cost of drywall repair?

Cost follows the size of the damage, how many coats it needs, whether a texture has to be matched and how much paint the wall takes. A nail pop is small work. A ceiling stain with soft board behind it is not. Tellez & Sons gives a free estimate after looking at the damage, so you have a number before any work starts.

Can a drywall repair be invisible?

Yes, when the surface, the texture and the paint all match. A patch can be flat and well taped and still show, because light across a wall exposes a wrong texture or a different sheen in seconds. Matching the texture by test, priming the repair and painting the whole wall is what makes it disappear.

How long does drywall need to dry between coats?

Each coat of joint compound has to dry completely before the next one goes on. A standard coat is usually dry by the next day, and damp weather slows it. Painting over compound that is still wet shows later as ridges and flashing. So a repair with several coats runs over days, and the paint follows once the last coat is dry and primed.

What if the stain comes from a water leak?

Find and stop the leak first, because new paint over an active leak fails. A roof leak, a clogged AC condensate line or a sweating duct is a common source. Once the source is fixed and the board is dry, soft board is cut out and replaced, then sealed with stain-blocking primer and painted.

Do you paint after repairing the wall?

Yes. Tellez & Sons is a painting company, so the repair and the paint are one job with one crew. The patch is primed, the texture matched and the whole wall painted, so the repair disappears into the finish. Reviews describe the same thing: old board and insulation replaced, new Sheetrock hung and the whole room painted by one crew.

Where do you repair drywall?

Boerne first, then Fair Oaks Ranch, Grey Forest, Timberwood Park, Shavano Park, Scenic Oaks, Bulverde, New Braunfels, San Antonio and Alamo Heights. Tellez & Sons has worked in San Antonio since 1982 and now takes on more homes and businesses around Boerne. The Boerne page has the local detail.
